EVIL CHILD BY TAEHEE WHANG

using the zine as a means of exploring “queer anxieties felt since [their] childhood navigating the binary of good and evil,” EVIL CHILD narrates the tale of a changeling + young babes stolen by fairies.

referencing the fairytale genre with its allusions to the blue fairy, angels, the devil, and fairy rings, whang’s work channels both the changeling myth and their own experiences w queerness– the narrator hopes the blue fairy can turn them “into a real boy”– and in doing so converges the personal and the mythological, the digital and the folkloric.

in transfiguring the realities of queerness into fantasy and back again, the tales within evil child serve as a means of better understanding/challenging queer autonomy, dysphoria, what’s real vs. unreal, natural vs. monstrous, good vs. evil– it’s more than a zine, but a gateway to the neitherworld.
